Thirteen years, 475 million views: how GTA6 rewrote the launch playbook

A long gap between numbered games, record-claiming trailers and a Netflix premiere show how one publisher turned silence into a marketing asset. We check the numbers and who reported them.

Same roads, bigger stories.

Most big-budget games spend their final year in a steady drumbeat: a trailer every quarter, a developer diary, a beta. Grand Theft Auto VI did something different. Grand Theft Auto V reached players on September 17, 2013, and its successor is due on November 19, 2026, a gap of thirteen years. In between, Rockstar released relatively little, and that scarcity became the campaign.

When a trailer is the event

The first trailer, which Rockstar posted a day early after a leak, was measured by TechCrunch at 85 million YouTube views in 22 hours, ahead of a 59.4 million non-music record held by a MrBeast upload. TheGamer later put the first trailer's first-day total at 93 million views, on YouTube only. These are reporters' counts at different moments, so they differ. The point is the scale: a game still more than a year from launch was drawing the audience of a major music release.

The second trailer, from May 2025, is where the numbers get slippery. TheGamer reported that Rockstar claimed 475 million views in 24 hours and called it the biggest video launch of all time. That figure adds views across several platforms. The same article reported about 83.6 million on YouTube when it was written, and pointed out that the first trailer was a YouTube-only premiere. Put plainly, 475 million is Rockstar's cross-platform total, and it should not be compared to the first trailer's single-platform count. Confirmed

Two big numbers can both be true and still not be comparable.

Silence as strategy

What changed between trailers was less the count than the cadence. After the second delay in November 2025, the official beats came as a run: pre-orders on June 25, 2026, an earnings update on August 7, an Extended Look on August 27 and, by early October, an age rating. Each beat points back to the same date.

The August premiere also changed the pipe. "An Extended Look" ran about 26 minutes, all captured in-game on PlayStation 5, premiered on Netflix at 3 p.m. ET and reached YouTube six hours later, per Rockstar and TheWrap. Take-Two called the Netflix tie-in a partnership on its earnings call. A streaming service is not where game trailers usually live, and it gave the reveal a "premiere night" shape closer to film.

It also came with creator rules. Rockstar allowed reaction videos, clips and live watch parties but not full unedited reposts, according to GTA BOOM's report of its posts. That is a quiet shift: an invitation to amplify, with a rail on it.

What still sits outside the numbers

Marketing figures describe attention, not sales. On the August earnings call, Take-Two said pre-orders were exceptional but cancelable and that it could not yet say how they would convert. We have seen sales estimates from analysts and trackers in other outlets and we have not reproduced them here, because we could not open the methodology behind them. Estimate

There is one lesson the record does support. When the gap between releases is long, every official asset gets treated as news. That raises the cost of mistakes and the value of precise language, which is what we try to apply to every number in this magazine.
